Rust Text Paint Shop Pro (PSP) tutorial

Here is my tutorial on how to make your own rust with this rust text Paint Shop Pro (PSP) tutorial. With this cool text effect you can add a rust texture to anything. Try it out, it works well with metal interfaces. This tutorial is similar to the one at Reaction Zero , but it is converted to work in PSP. Written for Paint Shop Pro (PSP) 7, but can probably be used for different versions.

Tutorial - Step 1 Rust Text Paint Shop Pro (PSP) tutorial

Create a new image Tutorial - Example Icon , 400x400 with a black background. Now create a new raster layer Tutorial - Example Icon . Then, using the text tool Tutorial - Example Icon create the text you want to add the effect to. Make the text floating, and press ok. Now move it until you have it where you want and go to Selections | Defloat.

With the selection still active, click on the flood fill Tutorial - Example Icon , and set it to gradient Tutorial - Example Icon . Click edit, and make your own gradient the resembles mine . Go to Selections | Save to Alpha Channel Tutorial - Example Icon , and press OK twice. Now, deselect, and your image should look like mine.

Now is the hard part. First, make a new Raster Layer Tutorial - Example Icon , and name this layer "rust". Click on the airbrush tool Tutorial - Example Icon , and enter the settings shown in the screen shot. Set the foreground color to red.

Next, using the airbrush, splatter some red coloring onto the text, in random patterns. Make sure it looks cool. If you can't do it randomly, just copy my design.

Next, go to Selections | Load From Alpha Channel Tutorial - Example Icon , and click on your saved selection. Now go to Selections | Invert Tutorial - Example Icon , and press delete. All of the airbrushing outside of the lines should have been deleted.

Thanks for Paul Farmer for this suggestion. For a different, older rust look, Effects | Artistic | Aged Newpaper and set it to 10.
