Grid Tutorial for Paint Shop Pro (PSP) 7 or 8

grid tutorial result

In this tutorial, you will learn how to add a grid to any image you want. This tutorial was written for Paint Shop Pro (PSP), but can probably be used for other versions as well.

If you are having any trouble at all with this tutorial, please watch the flash Viewlet video of this effect!

Tutorial - Step 1 Grid Paint Shop Pro (PSP) tutorial

I will show you how to add grids to an image. First start out with the image you would like to add a grid to.

Tutorial - Step 2 Grid Paint Shop Pro (PSP) tutorial

Now, make a new image that is 10 pixels by 10 pixels with a transparent background. This is very important that it is transparent, otherwise this will not work. You can actually make the image any size. For example: make a 30 by 30 pixel image if you want the grids to be 30 pixels large. With the paint brush size as "1" draw a black border around the outside of the image. You will make a black box. Do not close this image.

Tutorial - Step 3 Grid Paint Shop Pro (PSP) tutorial

Now switch back to the image that you would like to add the grid to. The next step is to make a new raster layer by going to Layers- New Raster Layer, and label this layer "grid". Now select the gradient tool and set the fill to a pattern fill . In PSP 9, go to the Materials pallete, and click on one of the two boxes of color. Then click on the "Pattern" tab. Then click on the arrow next to the box of the current pattern, and choose the small grid image that you just created. Now click ok, and left or right click (depending if you made the color the foreground or background color), and your grid should be pasted in.

Tutorial - Step 4 Grid Paint Shop Pro (PSP) tutorial

The last step is to lighten the grid by adjusting the opacity of the grid layer. Slide the slider to the left in the layers palette. You have now created the grid effect. You can chane the grid size by changing the size of the new image. If you are having any trouble at all with this tutorial, please watch the flash Viewlet video of this effect!

It seems like theres a step between 2 and 3. How do I get the grid as a pattern for the fill tool?

Hello,
I wanted to make a very simple banner.
I have Windows XP and Paint in the accessories.
I found this tutorial way over my head.
Thanks.

Hey skippy you can't make such things in simple windows paint prog, and well this tuturial says on the top that its for the prog called paint shop pro you should dl it first from jasc.com i'm not sure if they still allow you to dl it for 30 days free trial.

thats really very easy and clever,,
in second step he made a 10 by 10 pixel image and if you're aware of how to use gradients and pattern tools you would know that gradients tool would have all the images that you're working on in PSP as images and the others that are inside the gradient folder in psp folder, he made an image in step two to use as a gradient and after choosing it as a gradient he floodfill the first image.. very clever!!

I've been wanting a quick and easy way to achieve this effect for ages...and now I have one :) Thanks a lot

This tutorial was great! It took long to find a grid tutorial, but this one was excellent!

Posted by Hannah on Saturday, 07.3.04 @ 10:15pm | #98

You know, there is a very easier way to do this. All you have to do is copy the picture you have on your canvas, then paste it as a new layer. After that, go to Effect---->Texture Effects---->Tiles

Man I just got Psp 8 just and I coulnd't figure out this tutorial, then I look at Luckys post and then at the tutorial and with Luckys advice I had the grid i wanted in 10 sec I rated you guy a 0, thought it was a good effort!!!

*lol* maybe the tutorials were for earlier versions of psp. I know in psp 7.0, you can also get the scan lines effect by just going to Effects>textures>blinds its so much easier. You guys should explain the easiest way before you go into too much detail. For some people its way over there head, if they are new to psp.

You Know... I think its absolutely fantastic that this person has gone out of his way to post this tutorial (I mean afterall, he didnt have to), and I think its a bit rude to whinge about it. If you found it to hard, go to www.google.com search for other tutorials and be on your merry way.

THANKYOU for your wonderful tutorial, and for going out of your way to make your knowledge available for others to use, such as myself - it was very clear and concise.

Thankyou from Australia.

Shel.

Hey there, well I must say this tutorial made me swear a bit.. but it was a good idea to make comments below it, without it, I would'nt have managed to make my grid. Hunniah posted a comment explaining how to make it in a more understandable way - thank you. But I think you have made a mistake.. when you go to make fill, you don't have to choose gradient.. but instead Pattern (I have psp 8). Anyway, I don't want to ennoy you guys, but I'm going to explain it again:

1] Open the image you want to add a grid to.
2] Make a new image with pixels 10 by 10 with a transparent bakcground.
3] With the brush tool (size 1) make a black background round the border.
4] (Still with this image selected - not the one you want to add a grid to) go on Layers - New Raster Layer, and name it grid (leave the rest of the options as they are).
5] Select the image you want to add the grid to, choose the fill tool, and set it to Pattern. Now click on the image, and a box will pop up. In this box, click again on the image (or arrow pointing to the right) and select the grid. Click ok and close the dialog..
6] Now, click Layers - New raster layer (name it whatever you want) and fill the image! There goes your grid.
7] Now we want the grid to be lighter.. If you dont have the layers palletes open, click on View - Pallets - Layers (F8). We are gooing to adjust the opacity of the grid layer. Slide the slider to the left..
8] ..........Grid Completed..........

Pleaseeeeeee do send me comments and tell me what you think about my explenation :) .. I hope someone learns from it - my email is psaila_mike@yahoo.com or psaila_mike@hotmail.com thanks for reading!

Fairly good tutorial. I had to do a bit of thinking for myself though on how to do things, managed to complete it all in 20 minutes. Learned quite a bit, good job!

This really helps. Its a shame that everyone else can't figure out these nice details. People are so greedy ... wanting more details that aren't needed.

I am trying to put the border on the transparent background. . . its pissing me off because the colors are so wierd, I try to make it black, and the left side only goes black, the rest of it is white... i change the color to green, same exact thing, what color im using makes no difference, its pissing me off.

Posted by IceProdigy on Saturday, 11.6.04 @ 06:51am | #210

Make sure the paint brush is only 1px in size, and in the color pallete you have selected solid black.

Posted by Scott on Thursday, 11.11.04 @ 06:50pm | #218

OK, i found a way to do it :)

Its too hard to explain in here, so i will add this tutorial at my site.

humm...this took me a while to understand and carry out the grid pattern, since it seems like my fill effect doesn't have the pattern/gradient thing on it. Ah well, I managed a way without that. took me forever but w/e. Thanks! [<--not sarcastic by the way]

The step when you raster layer the whole thing is which picture? You did NOT make that clear. ~Is it the little block pattern, or the need-to-be-gridded picture? EH? >=(

This tutorial doesn't even deserve to be called a "tutorial". In step 3, it says to use the "gradient tool", yet shows a picture of the Flood Fill Tool.

A good (if short) tutorial. I have been looking unsuccessfully for a script which will create a grid (of any desired size) over a photo so that I can transfer the detail to a canvas as a guide for painting. This tutorial will help greatly in creating my own script. Thankyou!

Posted by Owlwings on Sunday, 09.16.07 @ 04:30am | #3019

this was an extremely helpful tutourial, however, i had to go to another site to find what all the jargon meant. "gradients" and "materials pallete" are things i found out that i use all the time!

it was excellent, but labelled incorectly, i don't think it is a beginner's level.

I must say that I found the tutorial very easy and had no problems with it all. Apparently the ones that are complaing about it(tutorial)have no idea concerning the basics with PSP. You cant jump right into it if you dont know the basics! LEARN the basics first, them move on. Dont be so rude to the individual who wrote this tutorial. You have no one to blame but youreselves if you dont know the basics! DUH!
